March meeting – Advance Statements (Russell James)

  • Russell James a PhD candidate from RMIT presented his research about Advance Statements at our March meeting

  • His presentation generated great discussion and there was an opportunity for members to part-take in his research

  • Russell’s presentation will be uploaded to the VMHILN website

Steering Committee Planning Day

  • The Steering Committee held its second planning day on the 13th Feb

  • The Network’s work plan for 2018 was set: MH & AOD Cross Sector Project, building formal relationship with Safer Care Victoria Mental Health Clinical Network, developing leadership content at meetings, workshops for members, induction program in July for new members

  • Watching briefs for 2018 – Consumer/carer workforce, the new Centre for Mental Health Workforce Learning and NDIS and Mental Health

Chief Psychiatrist’s Inpatient Leave of Absence Guideline

  • The Chief Psychiatrist’s Inpatient Leave of Absence Guideline has been edited and will be uploaded to the website https://www2.health.vic.gov.au/about/key-staff/chief-psychiatrist/chief-psychiatrist-guidelines/inpatient-leave-of-absence

  • The first draft of the Chief Psychiatrist’s Treatment Planning Guideline has been submitted and work is in the final stages for the optional Treatment Plan template.

  • The OCP will send the guideline and template to other stakeholders for feedback

  • The rewriting of these two guidelines has been a truly collaborative process with input from so many different people, well done to all involved!

TheMHS 2018

  • The TheMHS conference will be held in Adelaide 28th-31st August

  • TheMHS brings together people from across Australia and New Zealand to stimulate debates that challenge the boundaries of present knowledge and ideas about mental health care and mental health systems

  • The VMHILN has submitted an abstract to present at TheMHS in Adelaide in 2018

  • Three members of the Steering Committee have been invited to attend TheMHS

  • The VMHILN Management Team would like two other Network members to attend TheMHS and will pay for registration and flights

  • An Expression of Interest will be sent out shortly

Cross Sector Project

  • The first reference group meeting is scheduled for 17th April. There will be representation from DHHS, AOD and Dual Diagnosis

  • The Change Agent Network is running a forum on the 8th May from 9:45–1pm - Everything you wanted to know about the AOD sector (but didn’t know who to ask). To register please contact Rebekah Couldrey

Project Management Workshop

  • Christina Katopis from Learn4Results delivered a one day workshop on Project Management to Network members on the 27th March 2018

  • The evaluation from the workshop was very positive; we are building a Network of members who are equipped with tools to lead change for recovery

VMHILN Membership

  • VMHILN Membership was an agenda item at the most recent VMHILN Governance meeting

  • It was agreed that members who move to a new Area Mental Health Service (AMHS) may retain their Network membership, if their AMHS agrees to it

  • Members may retain membership if they are on secondment to another organisation (e.g. DHHS, CPN or MHCC) and have a substantive position at an AMHS to return to

  • Members who resign from an AMHS may be members of the VMHILN Alumni

  • Alumni will remain on the Key Stakeholder list and will receive updates from the VMHILN and the Network may call on past members for their expertise e.g. as guest speakers

2 Day Induction for New Members (2nd-3rd July 2018)

  • Based on discussion at the Network meeting, it was agreed to expand the induction program for new members to two days

  • Day 1 will be an introduction to the Network

  • Day 2 will be Managing Up and Managing Change workshop facilitated by Learn4Results

  • Jo Stubbs and Henrique Van-Dunem are conducting site visits and will be promoting the Induction program to services who do not have four active members

  • If you think your team needs new members can you please contact Jo or Henrique

  • Remember to communicate with your executive about the status of your membership

Next Meeting

  • Our next meeting will be held on the 15th May at the Royal College of Surgeons.

  • Emma Cadogan from DHHS will be a guest speaker
